What to pack for your first festival – the ultimate guide

Our top festival hacks for this summer

Our top festival hacks for this summer

Festival season is back – and it’s bigger, louder and more unmissable than ever. From sun-soaked afternoons at your favourite stages to late-night sets you’ll be talking about all year, there’s nothing quite like live music in the open air. Whether you’ve already locked in your tickets or you’re still building your ultimate summer lineup, a little planning can go a long way in making your festival experience seamless.

From beating the queues and packing like a pro to staying energised from the first act to the final encore, these top festival hacks are here to help you make the most of every moment. Because when it comes to festivals, it’s not just about who you see – it’s how you experience it.

Find your perfect festival

Plan Ahead Like a Pro

The best festival experiences start before you even arrive. Download your tickets in advance, check site maps, and screenshot set times (signal can be patchy when everyone’s trying to post at once). Pro tip: pick a couple of must-see acts, but leave room to discover something new—those unexpected sets often become the highlight.

Pack Smart (Not Heavy)

Think essentials only: portable charger, refillable water bottle, sunscreen, poncho (because… British summer), and a small crossbody bag. Comfortable footwear is non-negotiable—you’ll be on your feet all day chasing your favourite artists.

Beat the Rush

Arrive early to get your bearings, explore the site, and avoid peak entry queues. The same goes for food and merch—hit the stalls during off-peak times (mid-afternoon or during headline sets you’re skipping) to save time.

Stay Fuelled & Hydrated

Dancing all day is a workout. Keep energy levels up with regular snacks and plenty of water. Most festivals have refill stations—use them. Future you will be grateful when you’re still going strong for the headliner.

Set a Meeting Point

With big crowds and limited signal, it’s easy to lose your group. Pick a clear, easy-to-find landmark as your meeting spot—bonus points if it’s near good food.

Keep the Good Times Charged

Your phone is your map, camera, and lifeline. A fully charged portable battery is a festival MVP, keeping you connected from first act to encore.

Go With the Flow

Not everything will go exactly to plan—and that’s part of the magic. Stay flexible, embrace the atmosphere, and don’t stress the small stuff. Some of the best festival memories come from the moments you didn’t plan.

5 REASONS GOING TO A FESTIVAL SOLO IS ACTUALLY THE BEST

If you’re umm-ing and ahh-ing about going to that one festival you really want to go to but your friends just won’t commit, whether it’s because they’re low on cash or don’t fancy the line-up. So instead of missing out, go solo. We promise it’s not as daunting as it might sound. Festivals in the UK have some of the friendliest crowds, there are help points and safeguarding volunteers on site at most festivals, and you will be surrounded by people who love the same bands as you do, all there to have the best time. And even better, once you’re there, no one will be able to tell if you’re solo or just looking for your friends.

Ready to dip your toe into the solo festival world? We’ve got the biggest festivals in the UK at your disposal. If you’re not quite convinced yet, we have five reasons why you should give it a go.

Find your ideal festival here

Reason 1 – You can see whoever you want, whenever you want

And most important from wherever you want. The world is your oyster, and the festival is your playground. If you want to wait all day by the main stage for the headline so you’re front row? Absolutely! if you want to hope from stage to stage to catch as many bands across the weekend as you can – why not! There really is no limit, even if you just want to hang by the food stalls all day and try the multitude of options, you can. And even better, never miss your fave again because you’re trying to find your mates with little reception.

Reason 2 – New friends

Make new friends who like the same music. Whether you’re holding out in front row all day with fellow die-hards, discussing the first time and last time you saw YOUR artist or bonding over falling in love with a new band you’ve never seen before – music brings people together and might make you some new lifelong pals.

Reason 3 – Freedom to roam

Discover all the festival fun on offer including comedy, arts, bumper cars, rides and food stalls. Why not try that off the path paddleboarding workshop? Or listen to some poetry in the literature tent? You can’t go wrong, and if it’s not your bag, you can just find something else. No arguments or waiting around.

Reason 4 – Decorate your tent

It’s like sharing a house or a flat, compromises on who gets to chose the decorations, your tastes are as varied as the festival line-up and so you end up not decorating. If you camp solo, the only limits is your imagination (and the festival policies!). Bunting, whiteboards, fairy lights – you can make it the prettiest bell at the ball. Or just add a nice conversation starter flag or poster – just keep it classy.

Reason 5 – Don’t worry about losing mates in the crowd

To quote blink-182… “where are you? And I’m so sorry” – trying to find your mates across a multi-acre site can be daunting, and sometimes anxiety inducing. The lack of reception doesn’t make this much easier and unless you want to attach a balloon to all your mates, it’s going to be tricky to find them in a crowd of tens of thousands of people – though we might be onto something here, festival balloons! If you don’t want the hassle of playing Marco Polo, going solo means you only have to know where you are at all times.

Plus, check out our top tips and tricks for going to festivals solo:

  • Take enough breaks – don’t overstretch yourself
  • Find assistance if you need it – physical and mental health supports are available across most sites
  • Make sure you have your phone and phone charger
  • Listen to your mind and your body – do what’s best for you
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – don’t let that lack of H2O ruin your weekend

The Ultimate Guide to Packing for your First Festival

Are you gearing up for your first festival and have no idea what to bring with you? Pack like a pro with our expert tips from festival veterans so you can focus on making unforgettable memories in the fields.

Find your ideal festival here

Essentials first

Tickets: Ensure you have your ticket pre-downloaded and easily accessible on the Ticketmaster app, for seamless entry at the festival gates.
Cash & Cards: As many festivals are going cashless, bring a mix of both cash and cards to cover all your bases.

Be prepared for the great British summertime

In the ever-unpredictable British weather, be ready for anything from sunny spells to sudden showers. Pack essentials like sun cream, sunglasses, hats, rain ponchos, jackets, and extra layers to ensure you’re equipped for any weather twist.

Keeping hydrated

Carry a refillable water bottle to use at water stations and pack snacks like granola bars, nuts, and fruit to keep your energy up throughout the day.

Campsite essentials

Invest in a double skin tent to avoid condensation collecting on the walls, soggy tent contents is a no and so is a single use tent.
Bring a collapsable water container to minimise multiple trips to the campsite taps for brushing your teeth, or even makeshift showers in a pinch.
Bring a foldable chair, some of the best parts of festivals are the campsite laughs around your tents.

Arena essentials

Pack the must-haves like your phone, water bottle, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, tissues handy in a day bag to take into the arena with you.

Tech

Don’t forget to pack (and charge!) a long-lasting portable charger to capture all your new festival memories and stay connected with friends
Consider bringing a head torch to help navigate your way back to your tent or the campsite toilets after dark.

Leave No Trace

Finally, bring along a bin bag to dispose of your rubbish responsibly, and leave the festival grounds as beautiful as you found them.
