Are London theatres open on Sundays?

Most West End theatres are closed on Sundays, but there are some exceptions to this rule if you want to catch a London Theatre show at the weekend.

What about Mondays?

The majority of West End theatres have performances on Monday nights, but some of those shows that have Sunday performances close on Mondays. You can’t see Six the Musical, Matilda, The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, The Play That Goes Wrong, The Woman in Black, I Disney’s The Lion King, Thriller LIVE, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child or Fiddler on the Roof on Mondays.

When are West End Theatre showtimes?

Evening performances of London Theatre shows by and large start at 19:30 every night that there is a performance, but there is some variation on this. The following shows’ evening performances do not start until 19:45 nightly:

On Thursday nights Six the Musical performs a late-night show from 21:00, and at 20:00 on other evenings. Matilda the Musical starts evening performances at 19:00 and The Woman in Black doesn’t have curtain up until 20:00.

When are London Theatre matinees?

Matinees vary depending on the show. Traditionally shows have a Wednesday and Saturday matinee at 14:30 but some shows that run on Sundays often include a matinee performance here instead of one mid-week.

On Wednesdays, Matilda and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child matinees start at 14:00. On Saturdays, these times remain the same, and the following shows also vary their curtain-up from the usual 14:30 showtime at weekends:

The Mousetrap has matinees on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 15:00 and on Saturdays at 16:00.

In addition, the following shows have matinees on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays, which is becoming increasingly more common:

The Illusionists has matinee shows on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (14:30) and Sundays (14:00)

What are the most popular shows in the West End?

Legacy shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Wicked and Disney’s The Lion King often top lists for the most people show in West End theatres.

New shows like Hamilton, Waitress, Come From Away and Only Fools and Horses the Musical are all must-sees, and the West End is gearing up for the arrival of shows such as On Your Feet!, Dear Evan Hansen, Soldier of Orange and BIG the Musical.
