Blending electronic music elements from garage, D&B and jungle with hard-hitting emceeing, Grime emerged out of east London in the early 2000s to become a defining sub-genre of UK hip hop. From early sound pioneers such as So Solid Crew, Dizzee Rascal and Danny Weed to enduring mainstays Skepta, JME and the rest of Boy Better Know and beyond – get your fix of the best that grime has to offer here.

Drill music first emerged out of the Chicago music scene in the 2010s, and is a subsection of trap music characterised by heavy basslines, dark lyrics and a perceived tempo of 70 BPM. UK rappers have since adopted the sound and made it their own, creating drill that both captures the distinct experiences of inner city working class life (think Headie One, Nemzz and Kwengface) as well as more playful offshoots like Central Cee and Ceechynaa. Discover your next favourite drill artist here.

You could argue that hip hop is alternative in itself, with its origin as a counterculture movement and its ability to shapeshift over time. Today, we know alternative hip hop as the creation of new pathways and sub-genres, blending elements of rock, punk, electronic music, R&B and more. If you’re looking for shows that don’t fit the mould, unexpected visual performances, horrorcore, rap-singing and more, you’ve come to the right place. These gigs are for you.

The early years of hip hop focused mostly on what the East Coast had to offer, but in the early 90s, a subgenre was growing roots in the southern state of Atlanta. Trap music – getting its name from Atlanta slang term “traphouse” – emerged through artists such as Ghetto Mafia, Goodie Mob, Outkast and the Dungeon Family’s Cool Breeze. Modern trap music is often characterised by triple hi-hats, prominent 808 drums and brash bravado, but its spiritual origins are songs about life in the trap – “drug dealing music” (Okayplayer, 2018). Trap has since become a global phenomenon, with regional differences, lyrics across a myriad of languages, and cross-pollination with wider genres. Tap in.
